Overview

This term my grade 5/6 class are completing the integrated studies unit ‘Earn and Learn’. This unit is designed to explore how the community defines, classifies and uses resources and investigate the importance of personal money management and the role of banking, budgeting and saving. For the purpose of assignment two, I have set up a learning environment webpage through the student portal, using SharePoint. My aim is to facilitate the knowledge student’s gain from the ‘Earn & Learn’ unit and integrate this with various social softwares and WEB 2.0 resources. As the students will be using the ‘world wide web’ it is important to revisit the acceptable use policy they and their parents signed at the beginning of the year and more specifically the privacy issues that can occur through using WEB2.0 resources.

Description of Tasks

‘The Big Picture’

Earn & Learn is a topic with many facets the children will explore. Some of these include tax, superannuation and positions of responsibility. It is important for them to have a virtual learning environment which encompasses all aspects of this topic. They are therefore required to set up their own blog using blogspot. They will need to contribute regularly to this environment throughout the whole unit and house much of their information and knowledge there.

‘Assignment Two’

The student blogs are an important aspect of this assignment and will be integrated into the tasks I have set on SharePoint. The SharePoint learning environment is focused on students completing a set of tasks to purchase their own property. They will use knowledge gained from the Earn & Learn unit and participate in a number of computer lab sessions exploring social softwares, to complete the following tasks:

* Follow written instructions on the SharePoint environment to complete a range of tasks
* Access the assessment rubric to understand the expectations and criteria for the tasks.
* Complete an online rubric (upon completion) and upload
* Access links on SharePoint and upload text and photos to this site
* Use links to compare home loan lenders and interest rates/repayments
* Contribute to online discussions in SharePoint. Keep a video diary on their progression
* Use blogspot to create individual blogs where students will keep a record of their discoveries
* Post comments in each others blogs both in the form of discussion and as a mode of questioning and evaluation
* Watch and follow instructions from the Jing application
*Use Google earth to locate their property
*Complete an online home survey and discuss results using the discussion room. The discussion room will also be used as an ongoing evaluation forum to assess the applications they will be using
* Use Bubbl.us as a pre and post test on the tasks. Students will embed these mind maps onto their blogs.

Purpose and Audience

The purpose of this task is for students to become familiar and confident with exploring and using a range on online collaborative social software tools. I intend to model and provide scaffolding for the learning tasks and will encourage students to explore the applications and evaluate these with their peers through the use of the discussion room. The students will see purpose for their task as it has been carefully integrated into the term two topic ‘Earn and Learn’. They will explore all aspects of purchasing a house including searching for an appropriate lender and comparing interests rates and repayments. They will have an ongoing commitment to their learning environments and provide oral feedback (through the use of a video diary) on how they are progressing once per week. The tasks provide an opportunity for students to critically analyse WEB2.0 resources and provides opportunities for self and peer evaluation.

Assessment

I have included various modes of assessment for this assignment:

* The use of the assessment rubric to which students will be given upon commencement of the tasks. They are then aware of expectations and criteria
* The bubbl.us pre and post test mind map will allow me to see what the students already know about collaborative social software and the topic and the knowledge they have gained throughout the tasks
* The online survey will indicate the tasks the students have completed and any they haven’t
* Contributions to discussions in the discussion room and on peer blogs
* I will gain personal evaluation from selected students on the tasks and online applications used for the assignment. This will be done via email.

Please Leave Your Blog Address Here

Hi Everyone,
I really like Ben's idea of creating a catalogue where we can store each others blog addresses and post comments. This will keep things organised! Thanks Ben.
